View of the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort

Hyatt Regency Maui Review

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Maui on our last trip to Hawaii, and truly felt like paradise. We travel multiple times a year, and of all of our trips, this was our favorite vacation. There is just something magical about Maui.

How to Book It?

We booked our stay using credit card points, but this property is definitely worth the cash value.

For our stay, I booked the Hyatt Regency Maui for 29,000 points per night — although award nights here typically fluctuate between 21,000 and 29,000 points.

For our eight-night stay, I transferred 232,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt. Standard room rates at this resort often run around $600 per night, which means I got about 2 cents per point — an excellent redemption value. If you don’t have Chase Ultimate Rewards Points, I recommend you start with the card below.

  1. Log into your Chase account and go to “Travel” → “Transfer Points”.
  2. Choose World of Hyatt as your transfer partner.
  3. Enter your Hyatt membership number and the amount of points to transfer (must be in increments of 1,000).
  4. Transfers are instant in most cases, so you can book right away!

Tip: Hyatt is widely considered one of the best Chase transfer partners because their award chart still offers high-value redemptions — especially compared to cash prices at premium properties.

Rooms:

They have a huge selection of rooms. Standard rooms have the selection of two queens or a king and queen sleeper sofa. We prefer the sleeper sofa option as it gives us a lot of living space.

If you book a standard room, you will most likely have a Mountain View. If you have status with Hyatt, there is a chance you get upgraded to an Ocean View or Ocean Front room, which has breathtaking views. If you go in the winter, there’s a chance you’ll be able to see humpback whales from your balcony.

On this stay, we used a suite upgrade award for seven nights. It is ocean view, but to me, it was ocean front. It had one bedroom, a living room with a queen sleeper sofa, and two balconies, which actually provided a great view of the luau.

What is the Resort Like?

The resort is nothing short of AMAZING. It is our favorite Hyatt resort for so many reasons.

When we arrived, they greeted us with leis and made us feel special. Our room was ready early, which was a huge perk since we had been traveling for 14 hours. They delivered our bags to our room, and we immediately started enjoying the resort.

The Pools

It has two pools, and my kids loved both. The kids’ pool has a small slide, perfect for little kids that ends in 18 inches of water. It also has a splash area, and a pretty fast waterslide that ends in 9 ft of water (you must be 48 inches to ride this or sign a waiver at the recreational desk).

The other pool is huge and has varying depth levels (the deepest part of this pool is around 8 or 9 feet). It has more than enough room to float around and enjoy a Mai Tai! We brought our own floats, purchased from amazon, and the recreational desk will blow them up! You can also purchase a float there if you’d rather not haul one in your luggage.

We were able to find pool chairs every time, but sometimes it was nice to get four together, so we would head to the Hyatt Vacation Club next door. You have access to this pool if you are staying at the Regency. This pool had more shade, more chairs, and even another waterslide (no height restrictions on this one).

Also, at this pool, you can still charge food and beverage to your room, which was convenient.

If you’re deciding which room type or view to book, it helps to see what’s currently available and how pricing shifts between ocean view, resort view, and suites.

The Club Lounge

One of the HUGE perks of this property is the Club Lounge, where they serve breakfast, light snacks throughout the day, and then light appetizers from 5-7 PM every night.

You can earn an access the club a few ways.

  • Book a room with club access (this usually costs more, either in cash or points)
  • Use a Club Access Award certificate, which you can earn after staying 20 qualifying nights or receive as a gift from someone
  • Have Hyatt Globalist status, which includes club access automatically

What do meals look like in the club lounge?

Breakfast included either pancakes, French toast, or waffles, along with scrambled eggs, delicious muffins and banana bread, bacon or sausage, bagels, yogurt, etc. If you think of a typical free hotel breakfast, this is definitely a step up.

Snacks were usually potato chips, cookies, and nature valley bars, and they also had juices and fountain drinks, which were a family favorite (my kids are obsessed with POG juice).

Dinner switched every night. They usually had two hot items (meatballs, macaroni and cheese, glass noodles, coconut shrimp were some of the options while we were there), salads, veggies, hummus, and deli meats. My family easily turned this into dinner most nights, which saved us so much money. Also, the views from the lounge are just amazing.

We’ve visited our fair share of hotel lounges, and it may be the view, but this is my favorite hotel lounge.

The Beach

We absolutely loved the ocean here because you are steps away from breathtaking snorkeling. However, if you plan on sitting on the beach all day, this may not be the resort for you. The Hyatt’s beach is eroding and sometimes there isn’t very much sand.

As someone who loves the beach, I thought this would be a deal breaker for me, but because the snorkeling was amazing, and I could sit at the pool and still be super close to the ocean, it was perfect.

The resort allows you to take beach chairs for free for the day (they are the low Tommy Bahama chairs), so you can easily take these to another beach, or just walk down the beach path, and you’ll find plenty of sandy space.

Location

The Hyatt Regency Maui is located in Kāʻanapali, on the west side of Maui. We love this area — especially when traveling with kids. The beach is beautiful and family-friendly, and it’s generally more affordable than Wailea. Plus, it’s close to some of the island’s best snorkeling spots, which is a big win for our family.

The Hyatt is the last resort on the beach, but you can take the trolly to Whaler’s Village, or it is honestly such a beautiful walk. We love this area, and we will stay here again when we return.

Activities:

The resort offers a lot of activities, free and paid.

The popular activities included lei making, ukulele lessons, mermaid lessons, penguin feedings (yes, the resort has penguins!), social media classes, and an amazing luau right on property, among so many others. Here is a link to all the activities.

Something to keep in mind, some of the activities fill up. If you cannot register online, you need to register at the rec desk right at 7:30 AM.

The recreation desk has beach chairs you can rent, and lots of items for purchase, such as beach toys, floats, and pool toys. If your child enjoys playing in the sand, I recommend buying these toys and taking them with you (they cost a lot more on property and are the exact same ones linked here).

If you’re interested in staying fit on vacation, the gym is great and filled with everything you could need (the view makes this an amazing place to be). They also have pickleball courts and you can use their equipment for free.

Snorkeling and Recommended Excursions:

A guide said to us, Maui is more beautiful below the water, Kauai is more beautiful above the water, and that resonated with me. Maui’s snorkeling is absolutely stunning. I often felt like I was in a movie like Finding Nemo, it was just so clear. If you’re on Maui, I highly suggest you rent snorkel gear and explore the island.

We always rent our gear from the Snorkel Store. We’ve rented from them twice, not only is the gear perfect, but they walk you through all the best snorkel spots, where to park, and other advice. It only cost $70 for two sets of gear for our whole stay, which is a great deal. Click here if you want to rent gear from the Snorkel Store.

Excursions:

There are a TON of excursions to choose from in Maui. We’ve done snorkel boat tours and even a kayak snorkel tour. All the excursions are great, and you really cannot go wrong. All the guides in Maui have been top notch.

Here is a link to our snorkel tour with turtles. It was a different experience being out in the ocean on a kayak as opposed to a catamaran, but we loved it. Here is a link to the tour we did, which is very reasonable compared to other excursions in Maui.

Is the Resort For Families?

Yes! It is most definitely geared towards families. If you are an adult couple and looking for peace and quiet, this may not be the resort for you.

Although I will say, there is an adults only infinity pool located at the Hyatt Vacation Club, which was peaceful. We love this resort, and I could see my husband and I staying here, but we would know going in there are a lot of kids living their best lives.

If you want a quiet, more adult environment, the Hyatt Regency Maui probably isn’t for you.

Would We Stay Here Again?

Yes, yes, and another yes! I love the ocean, the snorkeling, and the resort. The Hyatt Regency Maui checks all the boxes for an amazing vacation. When the pools are great, the snorkeling is beautiful, and the water is gorgeous, what else can you really ask for?

If this resort is on your list, I’d honestly recommend checking current rates before you decide—Maui pricing can swing a lot depending on the time of year, and availability changes quickly.

If you can swing it with points, it’s an incredible redemption. If not, it’s still worth seeing what cash rates look like for your dates.

If we were not from the east coast, we would be here at least three times a year — this is my favorite spot in the whole world.

Do I Need a Car in Maui?

Yes, I would highly recommend a car. Although parking at the resort is $35 (this is waived if you have globalist status and book on points), it is worth it. You can walk to some restaurants, but if you really want to explore Maui, which I hope you do, you’ll need a car.

Can I fly for free?

We always fly and stay for free, although it does take some planning.

We use our Southwest Companion Passes to fly our family to Maui. My husband and I use points, and our children fly as our companions (so they are free!). If you’re interested in earning companion pass, you read my blog on How to Earn Southwest Companion Pass.

If you don’t use Southwest, or it isn’t a great option out of your home airport, feel free to do a free credit card consult, and I can help fly you for free.

If you’re looking to book a certain date, and it isn’t available, I would set an alert on MaxMyPoint. If the room opens up, it will send an alert to your e-mail and you can book.

Ready to Stay at the Hyatt Regency Maui on Credit Card Points

The easiest way to stay here is to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points and transfer them to Hyatt. If you need help selecting a credit card, please do my free credit card consult. If you don’t have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, that will be the card I usually recommend first.
